Diabetic Retinopathy

What is Diabetic Retinopathy?

Diabetic Retinopathy is a serious eye condition that affects individuals with diabetes. High blood sugar levels can damage the blood vessels in the eyes, often without any noticeable symptoms. As a result, Diabetic Retinopathy is the leading cause of blindness in adults.

Early detection plays a key role in effectively managing or even preventing the disease. Whether you have a family history of diabetes, have recently been diagnosed, or have been living with the condition for some time, scheduling an appointment is an important step in taking control of both your vision and your overall health.

In the early stages, Diabetic Retinopathy often has no symptoms. As the condition progresses, symptoms may begin to appear, and the risk to your vision increases.

Symptoms of Diabetic Retinopathy

As the disease advances, symptoms may include:

  • Blurry vision

  • Dark spots or floaters

  • Poor night vision

  • Faded or washed-out colors

  • Loss of vision

Your First Visit

During your initial visit, a customized eye exam will include a thorough review of your health history and the use of advanced diagnostic tools like Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) and retinal imaging. These technologies help detect signs of Diabetic Retinopathy at the earliest stages, even before symptoms appear. If serious retinopathy is diagnosed, a direct referral to Ophthalmology will be facilitated to ensure timely consultation and treatment options.
