“I was worried because I noticed my distance vision getting worse over time, and was concerned that it could be related to diabetes (which runs in my family). Dr. Korkis helped me feel SO much better!
She performed a very thorough exam, with all the imaging and reassured me my eye health was normal. Not to mention she’s so personable and has a great eye for choosing the right frames to suit my face! Thank you to Dr. Korkis and the team!” – Danielle C
“I’m a diabetic. How do I know if I have diabetic retinopathy?”
Diabetic Retinopathy initially does not present with symptoms. However, as the disease progresses, symptoms begin to develop. As well as the potential for the condition to become more sight threatening.
For this reason it is essential that you see your optometrist once a year for regular care, maintenance and prevention.
Symptoms of Diabetic Retinopathy include, but are not limited to:
- Blurry vision
- Dark spots
- Poor night vision
- Colors appearing faded or washed out
- Loss of vision
“What can I expect during my visit with Dr. Korkis?”
A customized exam and thorough investigation into your health history is standard for every initial visit with Dr. Korkis. In addition to that, Dr. Korkis will use specialised machines called Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) and Optomap.
Both of these devices are considered highly coveted – as they provide superior diagnostic abilities. With the advanced imaging proficiencies of these imaging technologies, Dr. Korkis can look at your retina and diagnose very early on if you have diabetic retinopathy.
Dr. Korkis explains “The amazing thing about these machines is that they have the potential to pick up optical signs of diabetes in patients. I’ve then been able to refer these patients back to their General Practitioners who can look into my patients health, and help determine whether or not the patient does have diabetes. The technology is so powerful that it provides not only a huge benefit to myself. But most importantly, my patients.”
If Dr. Korkis detects that you have Diabetic Retinopathy, she has the resources and vast referral network to help you get the care you need.
